What is AREDS2?
AREDS2 is a follow up study sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI) to determine if adding further nutritional ingredients to the original AREDS formula would provide better nutritional support for patient’s macular health. This was a five-year study with over 4,200 participants. One focus of the study was to see if beta-carotene should stay in the formula and to analyze the benefits of adding lutein and zeaxanthin. Findings showed that removing beta-carotene and adding lutein and zeaxanthin provided the best results. In addition, results of AREDS2 suggested that lowering the amount of zinc provided the same benefits as the original AREDS formula with a higher amount of zinc.
-
The doses of zinc used in the AREDS study (80mg per day of zinc in the form of zinc oxide for 6.3 years, on average) have been associated with a significant increase in hospitalizations for genitourinary causes, raising the possibility that chronically high intakes of zinc adversely affect some aspects of urinary physiology.1
-
The tolerable upper level of daily zinc intake is 40 mg.2
Long-term intakes above the Upper Limit increase the risk of adverse health effects. The Upper Limits do not apply to individuals receiving zinc for medical treatment, but such individuals should be under the care of a physician who monitors them for adverse health effects.
-
Less potential for stomach irritation
The original AREDS report (a ten year study) showed gastrointestinal issues were more common in participants who took zinc (80 mg) than a placebo.
-
Anemia
There is less concern for copper deficiency anemia.
